Graduation is more than just a ceremony; it’s a celebration of hard work, family support, and a moment that deserves to be captured in its full joy. That’s exactly what C wanted when she booked her graduation photo session with her family.
Instead of waiting until after the ceremony, C made a smart decision: she scheduled her session early in the morning before her graduation at Harvard. This allowed us to avoid the usual post-ceremony chaos crowds, parking challenges, and limited photo spots. The result? Calm, candid, and joyful portraits that captured the energy of the day without the stress.
Why You Shouldn’t Wait Until After the Ceremony
From my experience as a graduation photographer, many families assume photos happen after the ceremony, but that can be the hardest time to do them. Here’s why:
- Post-ceremony crowds make it hard to find clear spots without people in the background.
- Tight schedules after the event (dinners, travel plans, goodbyes) mean less relaxed time for photos.
- Traffic and parking become a major issue on or near campus.
With C’s session, we met around 8 am. Her family, who had flown in from out of the country, was excited. The campus was quiet and bathed in beautiful morning light. That early timing gave us space and freedom to shoot freely with none of the usual rush.

Pro Tip: Book Your Graduation Session Early
Whether you’re graduating from college, law school, or earning your master’s degree, your graduation day will fill up fast. I always recommend:
- Booking your photographer weeks (or even months) in advance, especially during peak graduation weekends.
- Schedule your session a week before your ceremony, if possible. That way, you can choose the best light and take your time without competing with other grads or events.
- If your family is visiting just for the day, plan a session first thing in the morning before the ceremony just like C did.
